Welcome to Year 3. Our teacher is Miss Howarth and our Teaching assistants are Mrs Mensforth and Mrs. Coulborn (who works in our classroom on some afternoons). Miss Howarth teaches PE on a Tuesday morning and a member of staff from the Sports Partnership teaches us dance on a Friday afternoon. We ask that earrings are taken out and girls with long hair have it tied back for safety. Children need a pair of pumps for indoors and trainers for outdoor P.E, weather permitting!

The children will read daily during English lessons and during guided reading workshop sessions where children are encouraged to read independently. .
The home reading book is for you to share with your child. Please comment in the record book when your child has read. As little and often is the key, if possible please try to hear your child read every night. We will change your child’s book when finished and ask that they bring it to school every day.

Number Facts

This term we are trying to learn our multiplication tables for 2, 3, 4 and 6. Each week we will focus on one multiplication which will then be tested in our Maths lessons on Friday and during the starter activity for the lesson.

We introduce new spellings during our English work and some of these are then practiced daily in class. Children are encouraged to use the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ method to learn the words. The spelling words will be linked to different word patterns from our phonics work in class. Children are given words to practice in their homework book on Fridays and these are then tested in a ’quiz’ on the following Thursday.

In year 3 the children are given homework on a Friday to be handed in the following Thursday. This will be English, Maths, and Topic activities connected with the work we are doing in class. Please can you make sure that your child uses a pencil to attempt all work. The tasks are designed to be completed at the child’s own level.  At the end of each half term the children are encouraged to be creative in this work and find out about topics we have covered by drawing pictures, collage or even models if they wish.

Topic Work

Our topic for this half term is ‘Chorley’, a geography based topic where we will study our village and locality learning about our likes and dislikes. As part of our science work we will be learning about light. You can find out information about next half term by looking at the curriculum map for Y3.

In our English lessons we will be reading and writing stories based on folk tales and biographies of local heroes from Lancashire.

In our Maths we are practicing adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers mentally, looking at the properties of different shapes and collecting information using different graphs.

We looked at a range of old and new maps of Chorley and the surrounding areas to see how they have changed over time.

We enjoyed active maths - learning our 2 times tables whilst keeping fit!

We have been practicing our ball skills in P.E, defending and feinting techniques.

In English we have been reading the Folk Tale of The Lancashire Giant and are now busy planning our our Folk Tales.

On National Poetry day we wrote a poem based on who we believe are real life heroes!

We enjoyed dressing up as Disney and Marvel characters for a special lunch.

We learnt how to use a compass and practiced following the compass points on the playground.

After learning about biographies in English we were lucky enough to have a world champion squash player, Laura Massaro, come to our school to do a P.E lesson!

In our Science lesson we learnt about the 'Eat well Plate' and categorised all the food groups.

We all had a 'spooktacular' time at the Halloween disco this week!

We had great fun with the 'Football Development Programme' that combined maths with basic football skills!
